Welcome to Buy Ashed: Practical Shed Advice from a Brisbane Tradie

G’day, I’m Dave Keller. I’ve been a carpenter in Brisbane for about twenty years, and I’ve built, installed, or worked in more sheds than I can count.

This blog is for people who need a shed - whether it’s for storage, a workshop, a garage, or whatever - and want straight advice without the sales pitch.

Why Another Shed Blog

Most information about sheds comes from companies trying to sell you one. They’ll tell you their sheds are brilliant and their competitors’ are rubbish. Not always helpful when you’re trying to make an actual decision.

I’m not selling sheds. I’m a tradie who works with them constantly and has opinions about what works and what’s a waste of money.

My Background

Been doing carpentry since I left school. Started as an apprentice, worked for various builders, eventually went out on my own doing residential work around Brisbane.

I’ve installed kit sheds from Bunnings, custom-built timber workshops, erected steel farm sheds, and everything in between. I’ve worked in sheds in 40-degree summer heat and seen what happens to cheap sheds after a few Brisbane storms.

That experience is what I’m sharing here.

What This Blog Will Cover

Shed buying guides: How to choose between steel, timber, and kit sheds. What size you actually need vs. what you think you need. When to DIY and when to pay for professional installation.

Council permits and regulations: Brisbane council requirements, when you need a permit, when you don’t, how to deal with paperwork.

Workshop setups: How to set up a functional workshop space. Tool storage, workbenches, lighting, power. Making the most of limited space.

Maintenance: Keeping your shed in good condition. Brisbane’s climate is rough on structures - heat, humidity, storms. Here’s how to deal with it.

DIY projects: Things you can build yourself if you’ve got basic tools and skills. Storage solutions, shelving, workbenches.

Product reviews: Honest opinions on shed kits, tools, and accessories based on actual use, not marketing specs.

What This Won’t Be

This won’t be fancy lifestyle content about creating your dream workshop. Most people just need a functional space that doesn’t leak and has room for their stuff.

I’m not here to sell you the most expensive option or pretend everything needs to be perfect. Sometimes good enough is actually good enough.

No fluff or SEO-optimized nonsense that doesn’t answer actual questions. Just practical information.

Brisbane Considerations

If you’re in Brisbane or similar climate (hot, humid, occasional severe storms), you’re dealing with specific challenges:

Heat: Metal sheds become ovens in summer. Insulation and ventilation matter.

Humidity: Rust is a real problem. So is mold on anything you store.

Storms: Brisbane gets severe weather. Your shed needs to be properly anchored or it’ll end up in your neighbor’s yard.

Termites: Brisbane’s got termites. If you’re building timber, you need proper treatment and barriers.

Council regulations: Brisbane City Council has specific requirements for sheds. Worth understanding before you buy.

First Proper Post

Next post will be a shed buying guide - how to figure out what size you need, steel vs. timber vs. kit options, and what you should actually spend.

After that, I’ll cover Brisbane council permit requirements because everyone asks about that and the council’s website is confusing.

Then probably a workshop setup guide for people turning their new shed into a functional workspace.

Why “Buy Ashed”

The name’s a bit of a laugh. “Buy a shed” but also “biased” - because everyone’s got opinions about sheds, including me. At least I’m upfront about it.

Get Involved

If you’ve got specific questions about sheds, workshops, or Brisbane building regulations, ask. I can’t promise to answer everything but I’ll try.

If you’ve made mistakes with shed projects (we all have), share them. Learning what doesn’t work is valuable.

I’m not on social media much, but you can comment on posts or email through the contact form.

What’s Coming

Like I said, shed buying guide is next. Then council permits. Then workshop setup.

After that, I’m thinking about covering:

  • Common shed problems and fixes
  • Tool storage solutions
  • Whether expensive shed kits are worth it
  • DIY vs. professional installation
  • Workshop lighting that actually works

We’ll see what people are interested in.

A Note on Safety

Any project I describe assumes basic knowledge of tools and safety. If you don’t know how to use power tools safely, learn that first before building anything.

I’ll mention safety considerations where relevant, but I’m not writing comprehensive safety guides for every tool. That’s your responsibility.

Brisbane heat means you need to work early or late in summer. Heatstroke is real. Stay hydrated and take breaks.

The Bottom Line

Sheds are simple structures but there are still ways to waste money or end up with something that doesn’t work for your needs.

I’ve seen enough good and bad sheds to have useful opinions about what matters. That’s what I’m sharing here.

Right, let’s talk about sheds.
